TITLE: How to write good

AUTHOR: Ryan Higa

RATING: ★★★★

TRIGGER WARNING:  Bullying, thoughts of death

WHERE DID I RECEIVE THIS?: HachetteNZ sent this to me in exchange for an honest review!

an unconventional, irreverent, yet heartfelt memoir by Ryan Higa, one of the top creators on YouTube. With pictures! And illustrations! And, y’know, words.

I’ll be honest when I say, I wasn’t really expecting to like this book a lot, and I’m still not 100% certain on the rating (but that’s more because I’ve never read a non fiction memoir like this( but overall I’m really glad I read this because it taught me a few things, and only took two hours to read!

This memoir follows the life of Youtube sensation Ryan Higa in his younger life. I remember watching him a few years ago and really enjoying his content and humor, and found that his book was just as good as his videos!

Now this is ghost written, and personally I don’t have a problem with that, especially when someone is straight forward about it but I understand some people feel a bit uncomfortable with someone being titled the author of a book when they’ve gotten help. This memoir is told from the perspective of seventh grade Ryan and Adult Ryan as he converses with his ghost writer in comic form (which was really cool) and slowly reveals life tips to the reader. I think the way this was written was really unique, it genuinely gave a writing tip at the start of each chapter and then delved into that part of Ryans life so you get writing and life tips, nice!

The best parts of this book for me were the humor & life lessons presented, it made it a really fun read, while reinforcing some ideas like, you’re really quite capable of achieving amazing things if you push yourself, while staying humorous.

Overall, I think if you’re into Memoirs or a fan of Ryan Higa? this is a must read because it’s so quick and fun!

How to write good was released on the 30th of May!
