Hi guys and welcome to another random thursday post! I don’t often intend to read books about mental health issues, but when I do, I either find that they are really great and have amazing representation, or that they suck and really upset people. So here are a few mental health books/books with elements of mental health that I have felt happy about (of course, everyones opinion is subjective and SHOULD be listened to, I can only assume it’s good rep based on my own Depression and Anxiety issues)
THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE – LAUREN JAMES
This is a novel set in space, so it doesn’t deal primarily with mental health issues BUT, the main character deals with alot of anxiety issues and has a counselor who gives her advice and helps her learn to cope with her anxiety.
TRAGIC KIND OF WONDERFUL – ERIC LINDSTROM
Honestly I personally cannot say if this is 100% great mental health rep or not, but this follows a Bi-polar girl who learns that medication, hospitalization and counselling are all things that will help not hinder her. It was a really beautiful read in the sense that everyone supported her, and it wasn’t love that helped her, but herself.
TASTE OF BLUE LIGHT – LYDIA RUFFLES
This was a really recent read and deals with a character who has PTSD from a major trauma. While I again can’t personally comment on how well it was portrayed, it really did teach me alot about it, and it showed the pain of going through the medical system to try and get some kind of diagnosis and help. This again had positive counseling rep (which is a running theme here) and her friends and family all wanted to help her, and did their best to keep her safe.
There you go! those are my top 3 mental health related books. They all deal with a different kind of mental health but as far as I can tell they all do it tastefully and really shine a positive light on the topic which is sorely needed with so many people going through those issues themselves.
until next time,
