Kady, Ezra, Hanna and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza–but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys–an old flame from Asha’s past–reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space,

heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

my thoughts

I have just finished the last 400 pages of this book in one sitting, I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, I’ve hoped & I’ve despaired and it’s all because of this book, all because of the way this was written & woven, & guys? it was beautiful

This is the conclusion to the Illuminae Files, so if you have not read Illuninae& Gemina, please do before continuing forward because this is easily in my top 10 series of all time. This novel picks up not long after Gemina, The people from Heimdall, Hypatia, Alexander, and Kerenza all fighting for their lives, but no longer knowing who the enemy is & who they’re fighting.

As with any book in this series, artwork wise? you’re in for a treat, from poetic lines of AIDAN’s to artwork scribbled by Hanna Donnely, there is nothing short of an amazing tale hidden within the bones of this book. Something to note for the curious, this book does contain MORE full page writing in the way of an analyst reviewing footage, which does make it reads like a normal novel for a decent portion of this book, however, even that is well written & full of snark ( let me say, chums,, I didn’t expect who it was that was writing these! )

The plot in this novel converges beautifully, covering the people stranded on Kerenza, fighting for their lives, to the two crews finally meeting & planning a rescue. You meet so many new characters, & every single one of them is just as three dimensional as in the last two books & I’m still flawed by one of the characters growth ( a little hint, he really does care for the crew! ) They managed to make villains redeem themselves, turn out o be heroes, and heroes to be villains. There was not a break in plot or character to lull you into a sense of security, this book really held nothing back.

Overall, the plot was amazing, the artwork to die for, the character growth astounding & every other part of this book just as good. If you gave even three stars to the previous installments of the Illuminae Files, this book is the PERFECT ending to this world, the perfect goodbye & safe travels. The ending was effortless & hopeful, it was everything this series needed & I am so thankful for getting to read this because if I hadn’t have requested this from Allen & Unwin, it could have been months till I got to reading Gemina.

I recommend this series to literally everyone, pick it up chums, you won’t regret it.

until next time,
Sarah
