The Fork, The Witch and The Worm is a collection of three short stories set in the universe of Eragon. I went into this collection having never read Eragon in my life, and I walked out humbled and desperate to get my hands on a copy of the whole series, just so I could spend a little more time trapped in this world.
This collection of stories follows Eragon in what I can assume is post book 4, where he is starting up a town of sorts. Each story is about him finding out a different story and it was insanely addictive. It has a story in a story feel, being with Eragon at the start and end of each story made the process of meeting new characters (new to me) very easy
I loved the aspect of starting and ending each story with Eragon. For example in the first one, he is stressed and then shown a vision by the elder dragons. Then we come back to him at the end. It felt like a good way to soothe into an opening and ending.
I enjoyed all three stories though I believe the first one to be my favourite only due to the characters. Murtagh became my favourite character closely followed by Eragon himself. I found every character was full of life, and they were so much more than their purpose on the page which is something I LOVE seeing. I felt like I was walking into a world that had thousands of hours of love poured into it, I felt like what I was walking into was real, it was so vivid.
There wasn’t a single negative for me in this collection, I enjoyed every aspect of this and sped through it. I read the whole thing in one evening and was left so, so happy.
Personally I believe this novel is perfect if you’re wanting to try out Eragon but are warey of the commitment or if you are a fan already. This was magical and the best book I’ve read so far in 2019
