TRY A CHAPTER ROUND #3 (Circe, Crooked…)

BLOG POST PSD (1) (1) (1) (1)

Hi Bookworms,
are you well?

Today’s post is a throwback to two I did in 2017. The try 5 books tag.
You can find those atrocious versions here and here, but there are no images and only bland text, who was I back then?

ANYWAYS. For anyone new to this, this is where you pick five books off your TBR and try the first chapter of each of them to see what you’re in the mood for. It’s pretty simple but it’s a fun adventure especially when you’re on the verge of escaping a reading slump like I am (Damn you starless sea for being so good!)

So, I mean, that’s all the explaining I really need to do, right?
Let’s get onto the post.

The books I’m going to be trying a chapter are in categories, kind of.

One will be my NEWEST ADDITION TO MY TBR.
One will be a TBR VETERAN.
One my MOST ANTICIPATED READ.
And then just two random books.

So, let’s start!

TBR VETERAN: CROOKED KINGDOM BY LEIGH BARDUGO.

Page I got up to: 32
My thoughts: This was really good. I forgot how much I love Leighs writing, and how much I love this cast of characters. It wasn’t hard to read to this point, and I could have kept going in all honesty.
Chance of continuing: I’d say a 60% The only thing currently holding me back is I want a quick read and I know this won’t be a super quick read.

MOST ANTICIPATED READ: CIRCE BY MADELINE MILLER

Page I got up to: 9
My thoughts: the writing in this was so small! I def read about the same as the other books but it was all squished in. Anyways. I am, not sure how I feel about this. I definitely didn’t have enough time to get into the story so I think that hindered my opinion, but I can tell this will be a slow read that might confuse me a bit, so I think it’s best I don’t pick this one up right now

RANDOM #1: THE VAN APFEN GIRLS ARE GONE

Page I got up to: 18
My thoughts: I was expecting to hate this, and I have no idea why. This is definitely very Australian feeling. And it’s definitely not what I’m in the mood for, but it wasn’t bad per say. I think it was interesting and I’m curious to know what happened to the van apfen girls.
Chance of continuing: 20%

RANDOM #2: THE VANISHING STAIR BY MAUREEN JOHNSON.

Page I got up to: 23
My thoughts: I genuinely forgot how easy to read this series is. It’s quick, quirky and full of twists and turns. I think this is a good ‘I need a book that won’t take me forever to read and will be fun’ pick. Which might make it perfect
Chance of continuing: 80%

MY NEWEST ADDITION: PUMPKINHEADS BY RAINBOW ROWELL.

Page I got up to: 11
My thoughts: So I purposely only set a small goal for this one as I knew I would know pretty quickly if I wanted to continue this. Straight off it is humorous and adorable with a beautiful art style that I admire. I could finish this in a day easily which obviously makes this a great I’m in a reading slump contender.

So, with all of those thoughts floating around, I’m going to continue with PUMPKINHEADS tonight. I want to say I will move straight onto THE VANISHING STAIR and CROOKED KINGDOM because of how much I enjoyed them, but I have THE TOLL sitting on my shelf, so I think that will be next, and then hopefully, those two books! (As long as I don’t get a pile of review books or my mood doesn’t change, who are we kidding, I bet I won’t read them for ageeeeeees)

Let me know if any of these books are your favourites!

  1. Hmmm.. I need to try this as well! I’m kind of not reading anything right now and I feel like I’m stuck 😓😓 But that’s a great idea! And I’ve heard only nice things about Pumpkinheads so I hope the rest was just as good for you 🙂
